I saw Star Trek Beyond on Tuesday night after what seemed like a long wait. Wife hates packed theatres, so we waited before going to see it.

First off, let me say I liked the movie. It was an enjoyable romp, the characters were great, and the setting was refreshing. Lots of things I liked about the movie.

But hot damn JJ, you don't know how to space. I really don't think JJ Abrams understands how distances in space works. In the first movie, Spock watches his home planet getting destroyed from... somewhere? Supposedly not even a moon, because Vulcan has no moons. There's no way to see these things from these positions. The next one had the Enterprise make a 5 minute warp trip to the Klingon homeworld like it was next door, and teleport in the same way. Again... that's just not right. Star Wars was just as bad, having the Starkiller Base blow up a bunch of planets, again all apparently within view of each other... which... just... isn't... ARGH!

Now in this movie there's a "nebula", which is actually an asteroid field, which is the tightest and most compact asteroid field ever, and there's a GIANT star-base on one side, and just a few minutes on the other there's... I don't even know. At least a planet. Like they come out of the "nebula" (again, not an actual nebula) and there's the planet RIGHT THERE. They didn't go through at warp speeds... just regular speed. So this planet is probably within gravitational range of the star-base, and yet no one knew about it? Again, same with this star. Hell, not just that, no one knows what's on the other side of this nebula, which must be GINORMOUS, because at the end they're talking about all the new star systems and planets and alien races they'll encounter on the other side of it.

So... was this paper-thin "nebula" like millions of light years long? No one could figure a way around this? Even at JJ-Abrams-Warp-Speed?

Anyways... that's my nerd-rage over with.

...

At least a lot less lens flairs though...

I'm pretty sure it was directed by Justin Lin (The Fast and the Furious Franchise). JJ's studio, Bad Robot, was just a producer.

Thought I saw JJ's name somewhere in the credits. Maybe it's someone else at that studio that's pushing the "space is actually pretty small, you know? like everything's really close together, all squished up" line.

Yeah. JJ Abrams produced it. That's it - Simon Pegg actually wrote the script. Justin Lin did the directing (thus the lack of lens flares). I'm sure Simon Pegg didn't consult anyone on the distance of things in space. :D

You're no longer watching a science fiction movie.... You're watching electrified versions of memorable characters do stupid or crazy shit to create tension ....
